How to Choose the Right Pillow Cover Size

The best-looking pillow arrangement starts with the right fit. A cover that is much larger than its insert can look loose, while a cover that is too small can strain the zipper and seams. Use the product page dimensions together with the steps below before ordering.

Measure the insert, not the old cover

1. Remove the insert from its existing cover.
2. Lay it on a flat surface without compressing it.
3. Measure straight across from seam to seam for width and height.
4. Check the new product page and select the closest listed cover size.

An old cover may have stretched or changed shape, so measuring it can give a misleading result. If you are buying both an insert and a cover, confirm how the insert manufacturer measures its product.

Common square pillow cover sizes

Should the cover match the insert?

For most everyday polyester inserts, a cover with the same stated size is the safest choice. For a fuller look, some decorators use an insert up to about 1–2 inches larger than the cover, particularly with soft, compressible down or down-alternative filling. This is a styling preference, not a universal rule: very firm or thick inserts may put excessive pressure on a smaller cover.

Do not choose a larger cover to make an insert look fuller. A larger cover contains more fabric and will normally create a looser appearance.

Choose the fit you want

• Tailored and full: use the same-size cover and insert, or test a slightly larger soft insert if the cover construction allows it.
• Relaxed: use the same stated size with a less firmly filled insert.
• Layered: place the largest pillows at the back, medium pillows in front and one smaller accent pillow near the center.

Account for shape and construction

Square measurements do not tell the whole story. Piping, embroidery, quilting and less-stretchy woven fabrics can make a cover feel more structured. A zipper opening can also be narrower than the finished cover. Fold or compress the insert gently when inserting it and never force the zipper.

Body pillow and lumbar covers use different proportions. Match both dimensions rather than relying only on the longest side.

• Confusing inches and centimeters.
• Assuming every brand uses exactly the same finished dimensions.
